Why Advocacy Matters

A Win for Dentists in the Fight for Fair Payment Policies

If you’ve ever wanted to throw your hands up over an insurance policy that makes zero sense, you’re not alone. And here’s the thing, sometimes the biggest industry wins happen because somebody finally says, “Enough.”

And when we say it together? We actually get results.

The MetLife Mess (and the Fix)

Recently, the American Dental Association went to bat for dentists after hearing about a MetLife policy that was… let’s just say, questionable.

Here’s the short version:
If two unrelated dentists treated the same patient, or even different family members on the same plan, MetLife was taking money from one dentist to “recover” an alleged overpayment they made to the other. Yep, even if those two dentists had zero affiliation with each other.

The kicker? In many states, that’s not even legal. And in a lot of cases, provider agreements didn’t give MetLife the right to do it in the first place.

The ADA stepped in this past April, sent a formal letter, and made it clear the policy didn’t fly.

And it worked.
By June, MetLife confirmed they’d change course: from now on, they’ll only offset overpayments from the dentist who actually received them. They expect this to be fully rolled out by year’s end.

Why This Is a Big Deal

This isn’t just about one insurer, it’s about setting a precedent.

  • It protects your revenue. You shouldn’t be on the hook for someone else’s payment issue.

  • It pushes other insurers to follow suit. One major change can ripple through the industry when there’s pressure behind it.

  • It keeps the focus on patients, not payment drama. Less time chasing your own money = more time for care.

Advocacy Only Works if We Use It

The MetLife win is proof that organized advocacy isn’t just “nice to have”, it’s a business essential.

Here’s how to make sure your voice counts:

  • Report shady or confusing insurance practices to your association. They can’t fight what they don’t know about.

  • Respond when they ask for surveys or feedback, numbers matter in negotiations.

  • Stay in the loop so you know when policy changes happen (and how they affect you).

The Bottom Line

Insurance companies have huge power over how we deliver, and get paid for, care. The only way to keep that power in check is to speak up.

Wins like this MetLife policy change aren’t just feel-good headlines, they’re direct wins for your bottom line. And when we keep showing up, keep reporting issues, and keep making noise, we make it harder for payers to ignore us.

The ADA is already urging other insurers to address similar nonsense. The louder our collective voice, the faster that change happens.

Let’s keep it going. Because when we stand together, we don’t just protect our practices, we protect our patients and our profession.
